A472 Fiddlers Elbow Viaduct Update
Emergency speed restrictions have been extended to the westbound lanes for motorists travelling over the A470 link bridge between Abercynon and Nelson (A472 Fiddlers Elbow viaduct).
In September traffic measures were introduced along the eastbound carriageway (towards Nelson), these will now be increased to include traffic travelling Westbound (towards the A470 at Abercynon roundabout) on the A470 link bridge between Abercynon and Nelson (A472 Fiddlers Elbow viaduct) until further notice.
Motorists and residents are being advised that there is likely to be some minor inconvenience due to a temporary speed restriction of 20mph being in place along both directions of the bridge. There are no proposals to include measures to physically protect the bridge joints on the westbound side at this time.
The works follow on from emergency survey works that were carried out, which have highlighted the need for repairs on this major bridge. It is anticipated that the permanent works will be carried out in Spring 2015.
This bridge carries thousands of motorists everyday and forms part of the strategic highways network for both Rhondda Cynon Taf and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council along with providing a main artery in to the neighbouring County Borough of Caerphilly. The permanent works that will be carried out next year are likely to cause major traffic disruption, but will be scheduled to minimise this as much as possible.
Drivers using this route are encouraged to take heed of information signs on site and abide by the temporary speed restrictions, as they are in place for public safety and to maintain access.
