Colourful clouds of powdered paint filled Dare Valley Country Park in Aberdare for Tŷ Hafan’s fourth Rainbow Run on Saturday 18 July.
Around 1,000 fundraisers were showered in bright rainbow colours for the 5K fun run to raise vital funds for Tŷ Hafan – the hospice for children in Wales.
One of the runners who took part was Lynne Morgan, who signed up for the challenge along with 50 of her close family and friends as her twin cousins, Rhodri and Lewys Watkins, are supported by the charity.
The 13-year-old twins, who suffer from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy – a condition which causes muscles to weaken and deteriorate – were referred to Tŷ Hafan when they were six years old.
The twins were on the side-lines of the run to cheer on ‘Team Rhodri and Lewys’ who all wore t-shirts with a Rainbow Run drawing they created especially for the event.
Lynne, from Merthyr Tydfil, said: “It has been a really emotional day and I’m thrilled that so many of our family and friends came together to raise funds for this wonderful cause. We have all had such a fantastic time.”
The twins mum, Wendy Watkins, said: “Everyone has been so supportive and the boys have had a great day today. I can’t thank Tŷ Hafan enough for what they have done for our family. They have given us so many amazing memories and the twins have experienced things they never would have experienced anywhere else. They help us make the most of every moment and are such a lifeline for us.”
Tŷ Hafan’s Ambassador, Leigh Halfpenny, even got covered in paint to record a good luck message for Tŷ Hafan’s Rainbow Runners.
In the video, he said: “Good luck to everyone taking part in the Rainbow Run this weekend. I hope you all get wonderfully colourful, like I have here, and raise lots of money for this wonderful cause.”
Kindly supported by the Jane Hodge Foundation, the Rainbow Run is expected to raise more than £50,000 for Tŷ Hafan.
Mair Kinsey, Tŷ Hafan’s Marketing and Events Officer, said: “Our fundraising events raise vital funds so that Tŷ Hafan can continue to provide comfort, care and support to hundreds of life-limited children and their families from across Wales.
“We would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in the Rainbow Run, especially our sponsors and amazing volunteers who worked incredibly hard to make the event such a success.”
Tŷ Hafan would like to thank EE, Gerryhill Car Sales, DVS Ltd, RCT Homes, Crownford Training for sponsoring the paint stations and Dare Valley Country Park, 9 Bar, Princes Gate, L’Oreal and Western Power Distribution for supporting the event.
