Primary school children were welcomed to police headquarters after being named winners of a Safer Internet Day art competition run by the force.
The competition, supported by the Welsh Rugby Union, aimed to raise awareness of internet safety amongst children aged 11 and under. It was launched as part of Safer Internet Day 2014.
Sarah Mohamed from Maes yr Haul Primary School, Bridgend fought off tough competition from1000 other school children to take overall first prize. Her colourful poster grabbed the judges’ attention because of its neat, clean design.
Other winners in the competition were Cole Rees-Williams from Edwardsville Primary School, Merthyr Tydfil who designed a poster themed around age appropriate online games, and Jessica Davies from Cwmdare Primary School in Aberdare who designed a poster around cyberbullying. Alfie Earing, from Ffynnon Taf Primary School in Taffs Well, also won a prize in the colouring-in part of the competition.
The winning children were treated to a trip to South Wales Police Headquarters where they were presented with their prizes by Chief Constable Peter Vaughan, Osprey’s rugby player Matthew Morgan and Jeremy Rogers from the WRU. They were also given insight into the work of the force and visited the dogs and mounted section, roads policing, the public service centre and the scientific support unit.
Detective Superintendent Lorraine Davies said:
“The internet opens up great opportunities for children where they can learn, play, access music, keep in touch with friends and generally have fun, however we all have a responsibility to ensure that they are aware of the potential risks they could face. Competitions like this give us an ideal opportunity to engage with school children across south Wales and share important safety messages with them.
“I’d like to congratulate all the winners. We had a fantastic response to the competition and the standard of entries was really high. It was a tough job to choose the winning entries,” she continued.
Jeremy Rogers, WRU Club Operations Advisor – Safeguarding added:
“We’re proud to work with South Wales Police to support competitions like this one. They are a fun way to get some really serious messages to young children and encourage them to think about keeping themselves safe.”
The winning designs will be used in the force’s future marketing campaigns around internet safety.
