Plenty of prizes are on offer at this year’s Nos Galan Road Races - and you don’t have to be a top athlete to win them!
The 2013 Nos Galan Road Races take place on Tuesday, December 31, and is on course to break all records, with the biggest field of runners in its 55-year history.
This year prizes will be offered for the best fancy dress and also the runner who helps raise the most sponsorship, which will go towards this year’s Mayor’s charities.
During her year of office Mayor Cllr Ann Crimmings, who is also the Chair of the Nos Galan Road Races Committee and Secretary of Aberdare Valley Amateur Athletics Club is raising funds for three very worthwhile causes. These are Macmillan Cancer Support (RCT), Guide Dogs Cymru and Diabetes Support for Children (RCT).
So each runner entering has a double challenge – the most important is to raise as much money as possible for charity. If successful they will receive a 23" LED TV with built in DVD player, along with a brand new Kindle.
Secondly we want to see the most outstanding fancy dress costumes that will help brighten up this special night even more. Last year’s winner was Mr Griffiths who won with his customized Mr Grand Slam costume.
This year the athlete judged to have the best outfit of them all will win a Samsung Galaxy Tab and Senseo Coffee Maker.
These prizes are being made possible thanks to the support of Safestyle Security of Cardiff, whose managing Director Darren Edwards has supported the Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor’s charities for over a decade.
The Nos Galan Road Races fun starts in Mountain Ash town centre at 4pm with the children’s races. This will be followed by an elite race and 5k adult fun run and a spectacular fireworks display.
The highlight of the night will be the arrival of the Nos Galan Mystery Runner, who will light the Nos Galan beacon at Rhos Square in Oxford Street, Mountain Ash.
Past Nos Galan Mystery Runners have included Ron Jones, David Bedford, Lillian Board, David Hemery, John Hartson, Shane Williams and London 2012 athletes Dai Greene and Samantha Bowen.
A free shuttle bus will run every 10-15 minutes from 3.30pm until 9.30pm on Tuesday, December 31, from Mountain Ash Comprehensive School, with drop-off and return collection from the bus stop outside the Aberdare Hotel, Ffrwd Crescent, near the town bridge.
This year celebrating its 55th anniversary, the world-famous Nos Galan Road Races are as popular today as they were in their heyday in the 1970s - with more people wishing to be a part of this unique New Year’s Eve experience than ever before.
Are you already registered to run in this year’s Nos Galan race and would like to raise money for worthy causes?
Then why not raise your sponsorship money for the Mayor’s Charity Appeal. It’s not too late to apply and you can download a sponsorship form from the “Fundraising” section of www.nosgalan.co.uk
