Top Cycling Event Returns To County Borough

Valleys Velo Sportive is coming back to the County Borough!

Valleys Velo Sportive – an exciting cycling event through the spectacular rolling scenery of Rhondda Cynon Taf – is coming back for a second consecutive year.

Following its hugely successful debut in 2013, Valleys Velo will return to the County Borough with its classic climbs, amazing views and fast descents.

Entries are already flooding in for the event and cyclists need to apply to join as soon as possible as places are limited to 500 participants. Last year almost 400 cyclists from all over the UK participated.

This year online entries opened on January 1st and already 150 people have signed up to take part in September 2014.

Open to all cyclists, the routes will take riders through the stunning Valleys of South Wales including the iconic ascents of the Rhigos and the Bwlch mountain passes, before threading its way along the valley floor.

Once again the event is being run in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Sports Development Team (SportRCT) and the Porth-based Bike Doctor Cycling Club.

Valleys Velo offers a choice of two distances, a Standard 65km and an Epic 95km, which means that there is something to appeal to all ability levels from the new cyclist to the experienced sportive rider.

The Standard Route heads from the DareValleyCountryPark, on the outskirts of Aberdare town centre, to Hirwaun and over the Rhigos mountain, offering riders stunning views high above Rhondda Cynon Taf. The route then descends into Treorchy, over Penrhys Hill, Pontypridd and Llanwonno before a final climb over Aberdare Mountain.

The Epic Route, a distance of 95km with a total climb of 6,000 feet over six major hills, leaves the Dare Valley Country Park towards Rhigos, climbing the stunning Bwlch Mountain and heading down the Ogmore Valley to Blackmill, Tonyrefail and Penygraig before joining the Standard Route in Ystrad at the foot of Penrhys Hill.

Do you have what it takes to compete in the Valleys Velo Sportive? Entry fee is £26.50 per cyclist, which includes an exclusive event T-shirt. However, this entry fee will rise to £32.00 from the start of May.

The Valleys Velo Sportive will start and finish at the DareValleyCountryPark, Aberdare, on Sunday, September 28.

Overnight accommodation is available at the DareValleyCountryPark and well as dining in the newly-opened restaurant, offering both the riders and their families the opportunity to relax before and after the event. Booking in advance is essential. Visit www.darevalleycountrypark.co.uk
