School improvement services consortium Appoints New Managing Director at £100,000 per annum

Central South Consortium

The Central South Consortium is delighted to announce that Hannah Woodhouse has been appointed as their new permanent Managing Director.

The Consortium has responsibility for the school improvement services of 417 schools across Central South Wales; an area that covers 30% of Welsh pupils. The Central South Consortium, based in Nantgarw, comprises over 100 staff and covers the Local Authority regions of Bridgend, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taff and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Hannah has been acting as Interim Managing Director since January 2014, as a consultant with Isos Partnership, and has previously worked since 1999 for the Department for Education in Whitehall covering school improvement and 14-19 education policy development. From September 2010 she has been Director of Strategy and Commissioning for education, young people and children’s services in Cambridgeshire Local Authority.

Since her arrival Hannah has worked with the leadership team in the Consortium including leading the organisation through a significant restructure process. On 28th January 2014 working with Prof Mel Ainscow and a strategy group of Headteachers, Hannah launched the Central South Wales Challenge. The programme involves all Central South Wales Schools and sees them being placed into school improvement groups. Schools are encouraged to share knowledge and expertise in order to create an education system that is ‘self-improving’ with long term sustainability.

Hannah Woodhouse comments, “I don’t underestimate the degree of challenge involved in improving educational outcomes across Central South Wales at the pace required, but in the time I’ve spent in the region I’ve been massively encouraged by the energy, expertise and commitment to drive improvement that exists in the head teachers I’ve met in schools, in the staff in the Consortium and in Local Authorities. I am convinced that it is this energy and commitment that will mean schools across the region can achieve real change.

Our ambition is to work alongside schools to enable headteachers to lead improvement from within and across schools, to develop and share practice and increase opportunities for constructive challenge and disciplined support. I think there are signs that education in Wales is entering a new era where improvement is centred in schools and led by schools. I am delighted to be able to serve in this role at this key time. I look forward to working with Central South Schools and Local Authorities to make this a reality.”
