Today the paddling pool in Ynysangharad Park will close for what is almost certain to be the last time. The pool opened in the early nineteen twenties, part of the park which was built as a monument to those who were lost in the First World War.
Next year sees the centenary of the start of that war, and to celebrate the Labour run Rhondda Cynon Taff Council is going to remove the paddling pool which has been used by generations and still brings thousands of people to the park every year.
They intend to 'renovate' the Lido, but apart from retaining a few features of the original façade the plans will produce a rectangular adult pool that is nothing special and a small children's pool alongside it which will not accommodate anywhere near as many children as the current paddling pool. They claim that they cannot afford to run the paddling pool alongside that.
RCT Welsh Liberal Democrats have fought long and hard to try and make them change their minds. Thousands of people have signed various petitions which have been ignored, and a referendum amongst residents in the Pontypridd Town Council area showed overwhelming support for keeping the paddling pool.
The response from Labour has been arrogant in the extreme. They simply don't care what people think. They lied to residents before the Council elections with not only a press statement but a promise in their manifesto that they would keep the paddling pool.
A week after the election the planning application was submitted that included the removal of the paddling pool. Every single Labour Councillor forgot the promise and voted in favour of the plans. Not one of them had the guts to speak against it in line with what the majority of residents who voted for them clearly wanted. Labour's Pontypridd Town Councillors didn't even bother to submit comments on the application. They all fell in line like the sheep they are.
Next year is the 100th anniversary of the start of the 1st World War. The war that Ynysangharad Park was set up to commemorate. It will also see an act of gross vandalism by the Labour Council in RCT as they tear up the paddling pool that was provided by the people for the people and is still wanted by the people.
Let's hope the people will remember that when the next election comes around.
