Residents warned after suspicious text message

Residents are urged to be on their guard after a Tonteg resident reported a suspicious text message contact from a company claiming to be Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Council Tax department.

The man contacted Counter Fraud officers at the local authority to report he has received several text messages that state he is in arrears with his Council Tax. The messages contain a link to a site where payment can be made.

As a result of the report, the Council is urging other residents to be aware and to make it clear no contact is made via text message.

Any customer contact – relating to Council Tax arrears or otherwise – is carried out via letter or telephone.

People who may also have received – or receive in the future – such a text message are urged not to respond to it, or enter any payment or personal information into external websites.

Those who are concerned can also contact the Council Tax department.
