At their June meeting the Cwm Taf University Health Board were presented with a range of documents including a report on the salaries paid to Executive Officers and Board Members. RCT Welsh Liberal Democrats say these salaries are excessive and that the Welsh Labour Government should be taking a good look at the system which allows it.
Councillor Mike Powell says
"This information is in the public domain, but it seems that very few members of the public realise that whilst the NHS in Wales is suffering in so many areas there are huge salaries being paid out to senior officers and substantial sums to Board members.
"The Chief Executive of Cwm Taf UHB last year picked up a very nice salary of between £170,000 and £175,000. This was boosted by a very nice pension deal meaning her entire salary package was between £195,000 and £200,000. Nice work if you can get it.
"No doubt all the hard working nurses and support staff are pleased to know that the ship is being steered by someone who is worth so much. Likewise all those patients waiting for treatment or diagnosis may be wondering whether they are getting value for money."
Amongst the smaller pay outs which seem to have slipped by un-noticed in the public eye is a payment of between £10,000 and £15,000 to Board members, including RCT Cabinet Member Mike Forey, who already picks up well over £30,000 for his Council role.
RCT Welsh Liberal Democrat Campaign Manager Karen Roberts added
"This is not an attack on the Chief Executive of Cwm Taf personally - Cwm Taf is no different from any other Health Board, but the system is surely wrong when such salaries are deemed acceptable for public services that are not delivering as they should.
"It really is time that a complete review was carried out and an end put to such excessive salaries in public services. Whilst there are cut backs in front line services and lower paid employees are having little or no pay rise then this is surely not acceptable."
