A few days ago the Local Government Minister for Wales published the third annual report giving key statistics for the "regional collaborative areas" in Wales. The regional collaborative area in our case is RCT and Merthyr which a recent report suggested should be combined into one Council area.
The report makes stark reading - and this is not make believe, or opposition scare tactics or supposition. It is a report by the Welsh Labour Government itself.
The report shows that:
Cwm Taf is the most deprived of the areas (using a standard area measure based on the Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation);
Cwm Taf is the only region where there are more people moving out to England than moving in.
The percentage of 15 year olds achieving 5 GCSEs including English or Welsh and Mathematics is lowest in Cwm Taf.
The lowest employment rate is in the Cwm Taf region, which has an employment rate of 64 per cent, which is 4.3 percentage points below the Wales average.
The percentage of people claiming income related benefits is highest in Cwm Taf, which also has the lowest employment rate.
Rhondda Cynon Taf has the highest employment rate, in the Cwm Taf area, with 64.3 per cent of people aged 16 to 64 being employed.
Cwm Taf has the highest percentage of adults who report their general health as fair or poor, at 25 per cent.. The Wales average is 21per cent. The percentage in Rhondda Cynon Taf is 20.3 per cent
Cwm Taf has the highest percentage of 16 to 24 year olds not in education, employment or training, with 27.8 per cent. The Wales average is 19.3 per cent.
In Cwm Taf, the average life expectancy for males is 76.6 years and for females it is 81 years. The Wales average life expectancy for males is 78.2 year and for females it is 82.2 years.
Cwm Taf has the highest percentage of areas that are in the most deprived 10 per cent in Wales.
The rate of social housing stock in Cwm Taf is lower than the Wales average. Merthyr Tydfil has the highest rate of social housing, with 24.5 dwellings per 100 households. The rate of social housing in Rhondda Cynon Taf is the lowest in Cwm Taf with 15.5 dwellings per 100 households.
In an area which has been dominated by Labour at all levels of Government this is a damning indictment of just what they have done - or failed to do - for this area. All their promises to stand up for Rhondda Cynon Taff and for Wales are worthless.
This is life under Labour in RCT, and it is time it stopped.
