Quizmaster Ian Cooper

Self-confessed ‘music nerd’ Ian Cooper has been putting his knowledge of music to very good use – by hosting quizzes for the Mayor’s Charity Appeal.

DJ Ian, of Tonteg, decided to help out with the annual appeal, which raises money for local charities, almost a decade ago. He has compiled and run quiz nights regularly since then, helping to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

Each year in Rhondda Cynon Taf, the elected mayor chooses a number of charities to support during their year in office. This year, Mayor Cllr Ann Crimmings has chosen to support Guide Dogs Cymru, Macmillan Cancer Support (RCT) and Diabetes Peer Support for Children (RCT).

The most recent quiz night hosted by Ian at Pontypridd RFC raised more than £460 for these charities, which support local people of all ages.

“I saw a message asking for ideas for the Mayor’s Appeal about 10 years ago and I responded to that,” explained Ian, who works in Finance at Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and has been compiling and hosting quizzes for around 25 years.

“I am a ‘music nerd ‘ – I’ve loved music since I was very young! I compile the quiz rounds myself, which include music, general knowledge and a picture round.”

“I’m really pleased I’ve been able to help the appeal.”

Mayor Cllr Ann Crimmings said: “I am so grateful to Ian for the time and effort he has put into helping the Mayor’s Charity Appeal over the years. Without people like him willing to give up their time for free, the Mayor’s office couldn’t carry out its important fundraising work.”

If you have an idea which you think could help raise funds, please call the Mayor’s Office on 01443 494061 or email mayor@rctcbc.gov.uk..

Forthcoming events in aid of the Mayor's Charity Appeal include an Elvis tribute night with the fabulous Ponty Presley on Friday, May 2, 2014, at Trallwn Workingmen’s Club, Coedpenmaen Road, Pontypridd, from 8pm.

Donations to the Mayor’s Charity Appeal can now be made through a secure online service. Please visit the Mayor's page if you would like to make a donation.
