Figures prove policy’s effectiveness
The Party of Wales AM Jocelyn Davies has outlined her support for increasing the number of 20mph zones, saying:
“About 560 20mph zones have now been rolled out in Wales, many of them funded by the Welsh Government. When Plaid Cymru was in the previous government we encouraged more local authorities to introduce these zones when and where they are needed. But progress has been variable across the country. Because the zones can only be set by local government, and Wales doesn’t have powers over national speed limits, in some areas 20mph coverage is patchy.
“Evidence suggests that reductions in speed limits save lives and reduce serious injuries. A trial in Port Talbot produced a reduction in personal injuries of 48%. As an Assembly, we must do all we can to speed up the reductions in casualty rates that have been achieved in recent years, and make Wales one of the safest countries in the world for pedestrians.”
