Plaid Cymru MEP, Jill Evans, addressed the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, in the European Parliament in Strasbourg. Jill Evans was responding to President Barosso’s speech at the State of the Union address, an annual speech made by the President of the European Commission to the European Parliament plenary session. In her comments, Jill Evans stated that Wales is part of a wider group of emerging nations (with Catalonia, Scotland and the Basque Country), and that the EU should respect the will of its citizens.
Addressing President Barroso in Strasbourg, Jill Evans MEP said:
“Today is Catalonia's national day, when thousands of people will form a human chain across the country demanding independence - the Catalan Way, based on The Baltic Way in 1989 which led to the independence of those countries and transformed this European Union. Next year there is a legally agreed referendum on Scottish independence.
“I represent Wales, a nation with its own government, but in the Council of Ministers our vote is cast by the UK - not in the Welsh national interest – even when funding and jobs are at stake. We want the ability to play a full part in rebuilding the economy, reclaiming Europe for all of its nations and regions – that will make Europe stronger. ”
