The Party of Wales Shadow Energy Minister Llyr Gruffydd said:
“This announcement is yet another reminder that we are all subject to the whims of the Big Six energy companies. Unfortunately we are powerless to stop them hiking up their prices, and forcing customers to pay these inflated bills.
“For too long, the energy companies have pushed up their prices when the wholesale cost of energy goes up but don’t bring it down when they reduce.
“That’s why Plaid Cymru has put forward proposals to bring this to an end.
“In the short term, Plaid Cymru will seek to lower VAT on energy prices because many families are already struggling to pay their energy bills and will not be able to cope with the inflated costs.
“But we have also called for the establishment of a new national Welsh energy firm, to tackle this problem once and for all. This Welsh energy company would buy gas and electricity at wholesale prices and sell direct to Welsh consumers and businesses.
“It’s not right that they people of Wales pay more for their energy than elsewhere in the UK, and that’s why Plaid Cymru thinks it’s imperative that we take action to address this issue.”
