Mayor, Cllr Ann Crimmings, collects the UK Running Award in London from classical singer Laura Wright
The Nos Galan Road Races is officially the Best Fun Run in Britain!
The world-famous annual event, organised by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and the Nos Galan Committee, took the top accolade at the 2014 UK Running Awards, held at St Paul’s in London.
The award was presented to Cllr Ann Crimmings, Mayor of Rhondda Cynon Taf and chair of the Nos Galan Committee, by multi-million selling classical singer Laura Wright, who went on to sing on BBC TV during the London Marathon on Sunday.
Organisers say the ‘Best Fun Run’ category at the 2014 UK Running Awards was the most competitive of them all.
Cllr Ann Crimmings said: “This is wonderful news for everyone associated with the Nos Galan Road Races. We all know how popular our historic event is - but it is a huge honour to officially get this national recognition at such a prestigious awards ceremony.
“The Running Awards celebrate the cream of the entire running industry in the UK. To win an award at this event is testimony to the success of the Nos Galan Road Races.
“First staged in 1958, the Nos Galan Road Races are a proud and rich part of our heritage. They have put the town of Mountain Ash, indeed the whole of Rhondda Cynon Taf, on the map.”
The 2013 Nos Galan Road Races, held in Mountain Ash town centre on New Year’s Eve, attracted the largest field of runners in the history of the event. Thousands of spectators also lined the route.
The highlight of the night was the arrival of the Nos Galan Mystery Runner, representing the spirit of legendary Welsh runner Guto Nyth Bran. Wales British Lion and Ospreys rugby player Alun Wyn Jones lit the Nos Galan beacon to herald the start of the 5k Adults fun run.
This followed a series of children’s races, an elite race and a spectacular fireworks display.
Previous Nos Galan Mystery Runners have included Ron Jones, Nicole Cooke, David Bedford, Lillian Board, David Hemery, John Hartson, Shane Williams and London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic athletes Dai Greene and Samantha Bowen.
The UK Running Awards is an annual ceremony celebrating the best of running and its culture around the country - from best fun runs and running events and marathons to best running shoes and the most innovative running apps.
Some eight months after its launch, and with more than 40,000 votes being registered, the awards ceremony was hosted by Mike Bushell, sports presenter for BBC Breakfast TV.
