2 new groups in Swansea and Rhondda
As a result of increasing demand Beat Cymru is launching new support groups in Swansea and Rhondda for people affected by eating disorders – both sufferers and carers.
Launched by Beat Cymru as the nearest support group was 27miles away in Bridgend,
the first meeting will take place on Tuesday 1st October from 6-7pm. Attendance is free and the group will meet once a month on the first Tuesday of each month at Meeting Room 3, Civic Centre, Swansea Council, Oystermouth Road, SA1 3SN.
The Rhondda group launches on 7th October and the first meeting, from 6-7pm will be for everyone - sufferers and carers. After that there will be a meeting on the first Monday of the month for sufferers and the third Monday of the month for family/carers and friends.
The group will meet at the premises of mental health charity New Horizons: 16a Dean Street, Aberdare, CF44 7BN
Beat Cymru Project Officer Adriana Copland: “We were determined to provide closer support geographically to individuals and families affected by these serious psychiatric illnesses to avoid unnecessary travel which can sometimes be difficult or impossible. The Rhondda Cynon Taff support group is the first for eating disorders in the South Wales valleys. We are aware that there is a great need for this service amongst health professionals, youth projects and universities. Schools have been in contact with us for support, worried about the rise of ‘diet culture’ and poor self esteem in many of the pupils.”
