Help is at hand to support older residents
With National Older People’s Day coming up this week (Tuesday, October 1), Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is reminding older residents of the services available to support them.
There are a range of Council-run services to help people live more independently, including Meals on Wheels and Reablement, while day centres across the county borough offer the chance for people to socialise and have a hot meal.
The Council works to empower and protect frail, older people and support the people who care for them and may be able to provide or arrange services to help each individual overcome any difficulties they may be experiencing.
There are also five 50+ Forums held regularly across the county borough. These are independent groups of people aged 50+ who meet in various locations to discuss issues that affect the lives of older people across the county borough.
"Rhondda Cynon Taf is home to a large 50+ population, which is continuing to grow year-on-year. We are proud of this fact but also recognise the challenges it can present.
"It is so important for us to ensure older residents have the information and support they need to remain healthy and independent. People within this very diverse 50+ age bracket require different levels of services. We will continue to provide targeted services to people who need them whilst encouraging others to help themselves so that they are not reliant on health and social services.
"The key priority is that we want an older population that is living life to the full," said Cllr Forey, who is also the Council’s Older Person’s Champion.
