Minister should be asking questions over RCT decision making processes

 Mike Powell

Welsh Liberal Democrat Councillor Mike Powell has written to the Local Government Minister asking her to intervene and hold an independent investigation into the unlawful decision taken by RCT Labour Council to cut nursery education.
Councillor Powell says
"This whole decision making process has been a fiasco and leaves the Council now having to look elsewhere for in-year budget cuts of around £4million after the budget has been set.
"The wholly inadequate response from the new Labour leader to the judicial review decision does not fill anyone will confidence that they understand the seriousness of the position.
"Nowhere in it is there any suggestion that they feel any regret for this, or that they will be looking at reviewing procedures in the light of the judge's remarks. Indeed most of it is taken up with making snide comments aimed at opposition Councillors rather than addressing the issues raised.
"Whilst nobody should be looking at making scapegoats for the sake of it then we should be asking, and indeed the Cabinet should be asking itself, why was this report so inadequate? It was written not by some junior member of staff but came from the Group Director of Corporate Services who is now the Chief Executive. Although the fact that Cabinet Members failed to question the quality of the report themselves in the first place does not instil any faith.
"I think the Welsh Government Minister for Local Government should take a close look at this and other decisions being taken by RCT Cabinet."
