January Snow

aberdare_park20.jpg

How has the snow been affecting you around Cynon Valley and Rhondda Cynon Taf?
I haven’t been out today but I have seen lots of kids with sleighs.

Not many cars moving from our street but some of the main roads look passable.

I have Tweeted a few photographs you can view them on the Twitter section on front page of the site, if I see any more I will re-Tweet them some people may be interested.
Be careful out there and keep warm and look out for elderly neighbours

Not been out of the house.

Not been out of the house. The snow seems very wet, our Cocker Spaniel went into the garden and came back in plastered in snow balls.

The car will have to remain where it is until the snow has cleared.

What I should have added was

What I should have added was we have seen quite a few birds in the garden on the feeders and table.
We always have lots of goldfinches a few redpolls had around 10 chaffinches 5 greenfinches, bullfinch, siskin, house sparrows in abundance black birds and robins

Went for a snowy walk today

Went for a snowy walk today down to town via the country park. Lovely walk and lovely scenery with the snow, but the snow is pulling a few trees and branches down, so be very carefull if you decide to go walking and choose these routes. As I was walking from the country park into town (the line that drops down into town and comes out by the social security offices), there were a few lound cracks, and trees were falling over with the weight of snow. One huge thick branch missed me by about 30 seconds. Eventually ended up in Weatherspoons, which was packed.

The car isn't going anywhere right now. My mobile weather app is saying more snow due next week, but that changes frequently, so I guess we will have to wait and see what happens.

It's nice when you have this

It's nice when you have this weather and you are under no pressure to go anywhere. Went for a few walks including the local park and then ended up in my local club where hardly anyone else turned up. Quite an enjoyable day.

Had photos of the snow in

Had photos of the snow in the Rhondda by e mail this morning.

Looked nice but I'll stick with the stuff on my Christmas cards thankyou.

It's 33 C degrees here today with not a cloud to be seen.

Catch you later, I'm off for a swim.

Having a look around it

Having a look around it seems the main roads are fine it’s just the side roads and streets they are like glass thick with ice.

With falling temperatures tonight it will be difficult for lots of people in the morning trying to get to work.

That’s the problem when you have a bad public transport system no decent jobs in the valley you need your car to get to your place of employment.

Lets hope the 2 mountain roads are open by the morning I know lots of people who travel that way and it’s a long way round if they are closed for any length of time and at extra cost with fuel prices as they are.
I don’t think this batch of snow was as bad as a few years ago, but I don’t think its over yet.

Anyone see the documentary on the big snow and freeze of 1963 on BBC yesterday? Then we were in trouble.

One thing the snow proved.

One thing the snow proved. There are otters in the Cynon at Mountain Ash. The paw prints are clear to see and definately two, maybe more of these enigmatic animals. Several people walking their dogs early in the morning or around dusk have had fleeting glimpses of them.

Let's hope that the arseholes with guns leave them alone.

Yes I saw the documentry on

Yes I saw the documentry on the big breeze and snow of 1963. I wasn't born then, so the worst snow fall I remember of my time was in 1982. The one thing I would say about 1963 is that there was far less traffic on the road compared to today. Also, far more people have to commute 20 miles or more to work these days, where as years ago jobs tended to be more local. That said, I can't even begin to imagine a snow fall anything like that of 1963, and what sort of impact it would have today. Hopefully I will never get to find out. One thing is for certain, bread and milk would be the last thing on my mind!

looks like I'm working

looks like I'm working again. Only Benefit Scroungers can take leisurely walks in the country park. Who cares about otters and rubbish like that? The only thing that matters is money going in the bank.

I too am back to work today.

I too am back to work today.

There was still plenty of

There was still plenty of traffic around back in 1963 and it was one of the worst years I can recall for freezing temperatures and amounts of snow.

The snow was on the ground for weeks on end even down in Cardiff where they don't normally get a lot of it.

I was driving for Bowles (Sand & Gravel, Ferry Road.)then and we were on hire to the council for clearing the snow from the streets of Cardiff and dumping it out on Leckwith common, Just about where the new Cardiff City soccer ground is now.

It was one hell of a year. The sea froze for hundreds of yards out in South End I think it was. One of the coldest years on record in the U K. I only just warmed up last week after it. But the worst year for snow I can remember was 1947 where in the Rhondda we had about 3 feet of the stuff. I remember opening the font door only to find the snow half way up the door. Needless to say it was around for ages and I had a cocker spaniel that went berserk in it and we had to have him put down.

We had new neighbours move

We had new neighbours move in last Wednesday. Sunday morning the young lad and his mate dug my car out and a couple of other neighbours cars as well. He's certainly picked a good place to live. Two retired men, a partially sighted man and a couple of women who live on their own.

One things for sure. I bet his name isn't 'Cocoman'.

He would have dug your cars

He would have dug your cars out to be fair but it would have cost you.

Taking a prescription to Glamorgan Street surgery, an RCT lorry filled with salt, was on the side road, and the men were spreading it with shovels. Quite a change to see!!!
