Street Games brings sport and leisure much closer to your home
Street Games is the latest craze to hit the streets of Rhondda Cynon Taf - and it is coming to a street near you!
Taking sport back to basics, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Sport RCT team are providing ‘Doorstep Sport’ - on street corners across the County Borough.
Sport and leisure activities are taking place in local parks, fields, car parks and in streets - in fact, anywhere that is safe to do so.
The aim is to take the games out into the communities as well as encouraging more and more people to visit one of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s 11 leisure centres.
Leisure for Life is a successful Rhondda Cynon Taf Council campaign that aims to get people of all ages active and undertaking exercise in a bid to improve their health and well-being.
It is all about talking simple steps to make exercise part of your daily routine and reaping the benefits alongside potential weight loss, enhanced fitness, muscle gain or even improved socialisation.
Cllr Robert Bevan, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, Leisure and Tourism, said: “Street Games are a brilliant initiative to get young people active and involved in some form of leisure activity on their own doorsteps. It is all about Changing Sport, Changing Communities and Changing Lives.
“Doorstep Sport is an emerging style of community engagement and sports delivery and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is delighted to be introducing it in the County Borough.”
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Street Games initiative is all about:
Young people having the chance to access sport regardless of their background.
Bringing sport much closer to the community - on the doorstep, on street corners.
Becoming part of the fabric of the community, leading to stronger and safer communities.
Activities undertaken include Football, Cricket, Rounders, Touch Rugby, Basketball and Ultimate Frisbee.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Leisure Services has a dedicated Sport RCT Team to help you get involved. Regardless of age, interest or ability, the team can help you find a sport or activity that is perfect for you.
Simply make contact with Sport RCT and tell them where you live and what you are interested in - and they can do the rest by making recommendations for clubs and classes, finding your nearest team and supporting you to get involved.
