Thanks to the Liberal Democrats in the UK Government working parents will be handed substantial extra help with childcare costs from next year.
Working families will be given up to £2,000 to ease the cost of childcare as part of a scheme to be rolled out in Autumn 2015. The Government will provide 20 per cent support on childcare costs up to £10,000 per year for each child. People in receipt of Universal Credit will get 85 per cent of childcare costs fully covered.
RCT Welsh Liberal Democrat Campaign Manager Karen Roberts welcomed the news
"Childcare costs are a major barrier for many in seeking employment, and recent press reports have highlighted just how high those costs are, especially in Wales.
"It is estimated that more than 83,000 people will benefit across Wales, almost 7,000 of those in Rhondda Cynon Taff. It highlights the Liberal Democrats commitment to addressing this major issue.
"It is stark contrast to the attitude of the Labour party both in Welsh Government and here in RCT. The Welsh Labour Government seems fixated on its Flying Start programme as its answer to the call for more affordable childcare. However, this only operates in the most deprived wards in Wales and is of no benefit at all to the vast majority of working parents.
"Meanwhile of course Rhondda Cynon Taff Council are proposing to increase childcare charges at its Council run Day Nurseries which will make them even more unaffordable."
