The new Supporting Working Carers Report published today (Tuesday 27 August) claims that better support for working carers would give businesses and the UK economy a much needed boost.
Better support would also save taxpayers £1.3 billion a year.
The report produced by the government, major employers and the charity Carer's UK presents new evidence from over 200 employers. It shows that providing carers with better support in the workplace can result in cost savings for businesses.
Carers already have a legal right to request flexible working hours after 26 weeks of continuous employment, and a Bill is going through Parliament that will give everyone that same right.
Alzheimer's Society comment:
'Working carers save the economy billions, yet too often they struggle helplessly to balance their job and caring responsibilities. By providing better support, businesses can retain skilled staff and improve productivity whilst benefiting thousands of hard working carers. With a million people set to develop dementia by 2021, this report is a timely reminder of a challenge employers can't afford to ignore.'
