The University’s Mathematics department has been rated top in the UK for “Maths for Teaching Excellence” by the Sunday Times University Guide 2013.

Last year, the department was also acknowledged as “Best in Wales for Maths” by The Guardian’s League Table 2012.

It also attained top position for Maths in the UK in the National Student Survey 2012 with final year students praising its personal touch and describing the lecturers as supportive, caring and genuinely interested in their welfare and academic development. They describe the course as stimulating and challenging while the staff are enthusiastic.

Dr Stephanie Perkins, the course leader for undergraduate maths programmes at Glamorgan, said: “We make a point of viewing our students as individuals with individual needs. We operate an open door policy and aim to ensure that students feel welcome to pop in to see us if they have a problem, either academically or personally. We have excellent graduate employability results which are a direct consequence of the modules offered that relate to careers in finance, technology and teaching.

“All of our staff are committed to having a first-rate course and an environment in which students can achieve their goals. We are absolutely delighted and very proud to be ranked so highly in the league tables.”

“Feedback from students highlights that they benefit from our small tutorial groups, year tutors and open-access work rooms which encourage peer-to-peer support among students from different years,” she said.

21-year-old Rosanna Ash, a final-year BSc (Hons) Mathematics student from Stourbridge, said: “I don’t think I could have made a better choice. The lecturers are all friendly and helpful, they never say they’re too busy to help when you have a problem and the students all get on well with each other”.

“In busier universities, I feel I may have been overlooked, but at Glamorgan, I have been supported in every way possible and as a result I am doing really well both with my studies and in general.”
