Enzo Calzaghe champions St John Wales youth

St John Wales

Legendary boxing trainer Enzo Calzaghe MBE has joined the list of ambassadors for national first aid charity St John Wales.

Enzo, who is head trainer for Team Calzaghe, said: “It’s a privilege and an honour to be asked to be an ambassador for St John Wales. I know first-hand the importance of learning First Aid as anything can happen within a boxing ring”.

As Britain’s most decorated trainer Mr Calzaghe will take on the role of Youth Training Ambassador with the charity, of which over 70% of its membership are under the age of 25. In his new role Mr Calzaghe will act as a figurehead for youth training standards across all of St John Wales’ many first aid and youth development programmes.

Mr Calzaghe’s official unveiling as ambassador will take place at his famous Newbridge Boxing Club which has produced three World Champions in recent years. St John youth members from across South Wales have been invited on a tour of the famous building and to exchange their first aid skills for some expert tuition. The day will also see Mr Calzaghe officially launch St John Wales’ innovative ‘Skills 4 Life’ project which will help tackle the skills and employability issues of young people across Wales.

On the appointment, Director of Youth for St John Wales Damian Thomas said “ Enzo Calzaghe has demonstrated throughout his career that the right standards of training are the key to achieving success. This is applicable to all walks of life and we are delighted to have someone of his standing as an ambassador of ours”.

St John Wales’ Skills 4 Life’ project is based around central themes of first aid promotion and providing meaningful skills and accredited learning to young people. Mr Calzaghe said of his role,

“I am pleased to be able to use my position to help raise awareness of the work that St John does and to encourage more people to learn first aid. This is a great opportunity for me and a role I couldn’t turn down”
