Diabetes supporter on The One Show

Fixing Dad.jpg

Look out for the inspiring story of Geoff Whitington on tonight’s The One Show at 7pm.

At the end of last year, Geoff weighed over 19 stone. His Type 2 diabetes had led to problems with his feet, including Charcot’s Foot, where the foot becomes deformed and misshapen due to severe neuropathy. He had very high blood pressure and cholesterol and, in the words of his family: “Dad was getting his affairs in order. He was preparing to die.”

That’s when his sons, Anthony and Ian, decided that enough was enough and that they were going to do their best to “fix Dad” by helping him embrace a healthy diet and introduce him to lots of different sports and challenges to reignite his passion for life.

Now the family are appearing on The One Show on BBC One to tell their story, raise awareness of Type 2 diabetes and hopefully inspire others with the condition to make positive changes to their lives.

The brothers say their motivation has come from Geoff himself because he gave their life to ensure they never went without and now they feel it’s their turn to give something back and give him the support he needs.

The brothers, who are both documentary film makers, have decided to record Geoff’s journey and say they hope their film, ‘Fixing Dad’, will inspire people to turn their lives around and others to help their loved ones get back on the right track.

Earlier this month Geoff and his sons and step son successfully completed Ride 100 for Diabetes UK, an epic cycling challenge made even more extreme by the mighty deluge of Hurricane Bertha, and have already raised over £2,300 for us.

Geoff’s days of junk food and heavy drinking have been replaced by salads, cycling, camping and sky-diving! Geoff has lost over four-and-a-half stone and his health has improved.

His sons say there is still more to do but they are determined to get Geoff back on track so he can enjoy his retirement as a healthy, successful man.

We look forward to continuing to support Geoff and his family on their journey.
