Concert boosts Poppy Appeal

Mayor Cllr Crimmings and guests at the presentation

A concert held in the Rhondda honouring servicemen and women past and present raised more than £1,700 for the Royal British Legion.

The successful RCT Festival of Remembrance Concert, which featured a number of performers, took place in November 2013 at Rhondda Sports Centre, Ystrad. Recently, Rhondda Cynon Taf Mayor Cllr Ann Crimmings has been able to present a cheque for £1,741 on behalf of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. The money was raised through concert ticket sales.

Gwen White, Gareth Pennell and Stan Power accepted the cheque on behalf of the Royal British Legion. They were joined by Cllr Craig Middle, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Justice, and Rhondda Cynon Taf Deputy Mayor, Cllr John Watts.

Mayor Cllr Crimmings said: "We are pleased we have been able to support the Royal British Legion, which provides financial, social and emotional support to members of the British Armed Forces, veterans and their dependants."

Cllr Craig Middle said: "The Festival of Remembrance concert was our opportunity to say thank you and to remember our servicemen and women, past and present. As well as being a very poignant concert, it was also a highly-entertaining evening.

"The concert complemented Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Armed Forces Community Covenant, which builds upon the Council’s work to date and the existing strong relationship and respect between armed forces personnel and local communities."

The Regimental Band and Corps of Drums of the Royal Welsh, with Director of Music Major Denis Burton, and Pendyrus Male Choir, with Musical Director Stewart Roberts, performed at the concert, along with soloist Ashley Richards.

The Royal British Legion holds a fundraising drive each year in the weeks before Remembrance Sunday.
