Christmas Advice from Cwm Taf Health Board

For over the coming festive period, please find attached information relating to the services of A & E, Minor Injury, Pharmacy and Out of Hours

A & E Services – Prince Charles Hospital and Royal Glamorgan Hospital

Please remember that you should dial 999 or visit the Accident and Emergency Department at your local hospital only if you have a genuine emergency, such as breathing difficulties, chest pain, loss of consciousness, severe loss of blood or a severe accident or emergency.

If you require an Emergency Ambulance (999) try to have your postcode ready or details of your exact location to help the emergency services find you more easily.

Please remember that if you do not have a genuine emergency you may be preventing someone else with a serious illness from getting the appropriate care.

For advice out of hours and over Bank Holidays in an emergency dental situation ring NHS Direct on 0845 601 0128 or visit www.nhsdirect.wales.nhs.uk.

Don’t forget to add Medicines

to your Christmas list !

With Christmas fast approaching please don’t forget to add medicines to your ‘things to do list’ as your practice and pharmacy will be closed for 2 days over Christmas and 1 day over New Year.

Please make sure that routine matters, such as repeat prescriptions and minor ailments are dealt with before the surgery closes.

When you are doing your Christmas shopping don’t forget to visit your Pharmacist
check you have the over the counter medicines you may need to help you treat minor ailments such as cuts and bruises, symptoms of colds and flu, coughs and indigestion.
You can ask your Pharmacist for advice as they are highly qualified people who can recommend treatments and over the counter medicines for a range of minor ailments.
Don’t forget to order repeat prescriptions with your Pharmacist well before the holiday periods.

For Pharmacy opening hours check your local evening newspaper or contact NHS Direct Wales.

Your surgery will be closed from:

6.30 p.m. on Tuesday 24th December to 8 a.m. on Friday 27th December

It will also be closed for New Year from:

6.30 p.m. on Tuesday 31st December to 8 a.m. on Thursday 2nd January

Choose Pharmacy Scheme

On October 3, the Health Minister Mark Drakeford launched the scheme at Hirwaun’s Co-operative Pharmacy.
The Choose Pharmacy scheme – also known as the common ailments scheme – is being piloted in 13 pharmacies in the Cwm Taf health board area.
Patients living in the Cynon Valley, suffering from a range of common ailments will be able to receive free advice and treatment from their pharmacist instead of making an appointment to see their GP.
Pharmacists will supply medicines from an agreed list, give advice, or refer to the GP if necessary. Medicines will be given free of charge* removing the payment barrier which can prevent patients choosing to see a pharmacist instead of their GP.
The 13 branches are as follows:

GP Out of Hours

During this period the GP out-of-hours service will be available for urgent cases only. Please ensure that you visit your surgery for routine matters before they close for Christmas.

If you need to see a doctor because you have an urgent or serious medical problem, that CANNOT wait until your surgery re-opens then please:

1) RING YOUR PRACTICE and follow the instructions on the answer phone. The message will give you the phone number for the out-of-hours service. Calls will be answered by a call handler and charged at local rate.

2) The call handler will take your details and you will be either offered advice or asked to attend the nearest Primary Care Centre if it is felt appropriate, but please note that you cannot be seen unless you have been given an appointment to attend there.

3) If you are too ill to attend the centre a doctor may decide that a home visit is necessary but it is only in exceptional
circumstances a home visit takes place.
