Children Enjoy Summer Reading Challenge

Children Enjoy Summer Reading Challenge

Prepare to be amazed with a new Summer Reading Challenge taking place throughout the County Borough this week.

Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries has teamed up with the Reading Agency to launch the Mythical Maze Summer Reading Challenge 2014.

Recognised as the UK's biggest annual reading promotion for four to eleven-year olds, a host of libraries in the area are taking up the free – and fun - literacy challenge this week.

Called The Mythical Maze, the challenge invites children to sign up at their local library and receive a Mythical Maze poster to get them started, featuring fantastical creatures from myths and legends, folk tales and fables.

They are charged to read six library books of their choice during the summer, collecting incentives along the way.

Children who complete the Challenge get a Mythical Maze certificate and medal.

The Mythical Maze is also the theme of the free story and craft sessions at Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries where you can come along and create your own mythical beast.

Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning at Rhondda Cynon Taf said: “This scheme displays the exceptional work being carried out by the Council’s Libraries Service to encourage more young people to enjoy the benefits of reading.

“Such literacy projects are crucial to inspiring school children to realize the joy that can be experienced from reading and creative writing in a fun-filled, entertaining way.”

This week a host of free “Dragon Stories & Crafts” events are being held in the following Rhondda Cynon Taf Libraries. So come along and enjoy this exciting workshop!
