The Big Tweet for Missing Children will be taking place throughout the 24 hours of International Missing Children’s Day (Sunday 25 May)

We will be retweeting from @swpolice throughout the day and anyone else can join in by following @missingpeople and retweeting as many of the appeals as possible. The aim is to try to reach followers that may have information leading to a child being reunited with their family.

Last year the online event generated 58,000 retweets of appeals throughout the day, and two of the children featured were found. Child Rescue Alert The Big Tweet will also encourage members of the public to sign up to an enhanced Child Rescue Alert system which becomes operational on the same day. The enhanced system will issue alerts via email and text message when a child has disappeared and their life is at immediate risk.

It is the responsibility of the National Crime Agency in partnership with the charity Missing People plus technology company Groupcall Limited and has been funded by the players of the People’s Postcode Lottery and the EU. Charlie Hedges, manager for Missing and Abducted Children at Ceop, part of the NCA, said:

“It enables us to disseminate messages either at a very localised level or nationally quickly and effectively whenever there is a particularly highly endangered child we are trying to locate. “We are encouraging the public to sign up to the scheme so they can receive alerts, hopefully on rare occasions when we use the scheme.”

Anyone can help save a child’s life, by signing up for reminders at www.missingpeople.org.uk/BigTweet, and retweeting the appeals using #TheBigTweet on the day.
