Charity Sustrans Cymru is backing new Welsh Government amendments being brought forward to the Active Travel Bill ahead of the final legislative stages next Tuesday [1st October].
Sustrans Cymru has led the campaign from the Bill, and during the legislative process the charity has called for the legislation to tackle not just maps and routes, but wider measures which will help people see cycling as a viable option for short journeys such as cycle training and better promotion.
Following evidence given by the charity, and a vast array of organisations and experts, the Welsh Government has now brought forward new amendments to the Bill that will address these issues.
Sustrans Cymru National Director, Jane Lorimer, said, “If these amendments are passed, Wales will truly have legislation to be proud of – putting active travel right at the heart of the political agenda.
“From the beginning of the journey we – and others – have said that safe spaces are crucial, but just mapping routes and building them won’t lead to the ambition set out in the original white paper. To bring about a culture change where public health improves due to more people walking and cycling for short journeys, a whole package of measures needs to be put in place by Councils and Government.
“The First Minister spoke passionately about the need to make Wales a cycling nation just last week, and these changes ensure the legislative framework is in place to do just that.
“We’re delighted these changes to the Bill have been brought forward as part of this world-first legislation. The big challenge for the Welsh Government going forward is to make sure the Bill is backed by a strong, long-term, funding commitment to active travel.”
The amendments to the Bill will be debated and voted on on Tuesday 1 October. This will be followed by the final vote on the Bill, which will become an Act if passed. It will then need to receive Royal Assent.
