Only Boys Aloud
Boasting singing sensations enjoyed by millions of people, Tom Jones’ “long lost son”, mountain gorillas and a packed programme of free family fun, Aberdare Festival is set to be one of the most exciting dates of 2014!
The event has already attracted attention as it is where the Queen’s Baton Relay will arrive as part of its journey around the world ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, accompanied by Rhondda Cynon Taf’s sporting stars of the past, present and future.
Now, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is proud to announce Britain’s Got Talent finalists Only Boys Aloud, comprising young men from the county borough and the wider South Wales Valleys, will headline on the day – supported by an exciting range of local talent!
Their appearance will no doubt further increase the profile of the event which will, in turn, boost the positive impact Aberdare Festival is likely to have on the newly-regenerated town centre, showcasing its businesses, shops and eateries and further promoting RCT as a visitor destination.
Cllr Maureen Webber, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Council Business and Public Relations, said: “There is much to be proud of about life in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Our county borough boasts a huge range of sporting, cultural and performing talent, which will be showcased and celebrated through Aberdare Festival in order to encourage and inspire others.
“Aberdare Festival will attract hundreds of people of all ages to the historic town centre and the beautiful park, providing yet another opportunity to showcase Aberdare, support its shops and businesses and boost the local economy.”
Only Boys Aloud’s performance in the park will be a massive treat for residents, allowing them to enjoy the magical act that inspired standing ovations and huge praise from music mogul Simon Cowell and entertainment experts Alesha Dixon, David Walliams and Amanda Holden.
If that wasn’t enough, the Council has also secured Swing artist Paul Black for the visitors’ entertainment. Paul is a South Wales-based artist who convinced The Voice UK judge Will.I.AM he was from New Jersey when he competed in the blind auditions of the smash hit television series earlier this year – before then trying to convince Sir Tom Jones he was his long-lost son!
Paul has over 25 years experience in the music industry and has performed at the Motorpoint Arena and Wales Millennium Centre, to name but a few.
All the family will love his polished, vibrant show which transports you to the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas and the hey-day of favourites including Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davies Jr – as well as a few modern surprises thrown in for good measure.
These acts will share the stage with some of the finest local talent Rhondda Cynon Taf has to offer. It has fast become tradition for flagship events such as Aberdare Festival and Ponty’s Big Weekend to support and showcase local bands. The Reason are first to be confirmed in this line-up. They will make a welcome return to Aberdare Festival with their excellent set comprising modern classics and family favourites. Watch this space for news of more acts being announced soon!
Show-stopping musical performances and a global sporting event are just some of the highlights of the day, which has been organised to offer free fun for all the family, to celebrate life in Rhondda Cynon Taf and showcasing the talent, culture and attractions of the area.
Arena shows have also been organised to enjoy throughout the day, including Savage Skills mountain bike stunt show, duck driving, Black Mountains Falconry and Above and Beyond Aerial display team.
There will also be a fun fair, mobile farm, Felix and Felix comedy penny farthing act and an extraordinary attraction featuring realistic Mountain Gorillas, accompanied by their entertaining and educational explorer guide, who offers a unique insight into the life of these mammals.
