Responding to the Health Minister's announcement that he has approved initial plans for the long-awaited Specialist and Critical Care Centre (SCCC) in Gwent, Kirsty Williams, Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats said:
"Time and time again this Welsh Labour Government has strung everyone along with regards to the Critical Care Centre. I hope this isn't just another smoke and mirrors announcement. This centre is an integral part of the South Wales NHS reorganisation plans as it features in each and every one of the options health boards across South Wales have been consulting on.
"The Welsh Labour Government first promised this centre back in 2008. Having the Outlines Business Case accepted is only a very small step towards making this centre a reality. It has taken five years to have this plan approved. The people of South Wales should not be forced to wait another five years until the Minister approves the Full Business Case.
"While making this announcement, the Health Minister has omitted any details about how the government will pay for this project. The total estimated cost of the project is £242m, which would make up nearly the entire cost of the NHS's annual capital budget. There are clear issues of affordability here that the Welsh Labour Government has neglected to mention.
"It's only when I see the ribbon cut at the SCCC will I believe that Labour has delivered what it has so often promised."
